During Jesus’s time and ministry on earth, He encountered many demon-possessed humans where He casted out the unclean spirits and made the people whole again. One example in the bible where it explains a very powerful legion of demons (Roman legion meaning a 6,000 soldier army, symbolizing many demons) had possessed a man for a very long time. This naked man had lived in the tombs and grave yard and could not be bound with chains and shackles because he was too powerful or having super human strength from being demon-possessed by a legion of demons.
In Luke 8:26-33, Jesus encounters this demon-possessed man to where the legion of demons know Jesus and trembles as we read: “26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, ‘What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!’ 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. 30 Jesus asked him, saying, ‘What is your name?’ And he said, ‘Legion,’ because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss. 32 Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned.” This legion of demons knew that Jesus was the Son of God and they were very scared that Jesus had come to destroy them or send them to the abyss (bottomless pit). However, Jesus had another mission when He had come to earth over 2,000 years ago. It was to serve the people, heal the sick, preach the gospel, appoint apostles to create the church, and to bring us true salvation by dying in our place for our sins at Calvary on the cross, and overcoming death by being resurrected. He had not yet come to condemn the fallen angels and wicked humans. This will happen at His second coming as we read in Revelation 19:11-20, “11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS….19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.”
What does the bible tell us about the abyss that this legion of fallen angels were so afraid of going to? The bible reveals that the watcher angels in Noah’s and Enoch’s time were supposed to be watching over the people but they committed a major sin by crossing over their proper domain into our human domain and married woman of their choice and had offspring that were giants (Nephilim) – 2 Peter 2:4-5, Jude 1:6. These watcher fallen angels and giants were very evil which spread through the earth to where God was very sorry that He had made man and beast on the earth. Later, God destroyed the entire earth with a flood and saved only 8 souls (estimated as approximately 750 million people or more on earth at that time), Noah’s family with a wooden ark (boat). In Genesis 6:1-8, we read “1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. 3 And the LORD said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.’ 4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. 5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the LORD said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” All the watcher fallen angels that committed this huge sin against God and His creation were cast into the abyss immediately after and bound until the great day of judgement. Even Satan and the other fallen angels have not yet been cast into the abyss as we read in Jude 1:6, “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.”
Another example of when Jesus had cast out demons from an unclean man was when He was teaching the scriptures in the synagogue and was confronted with another demon-possessed man at Capernaum. The bible explains in Mark 1:22-26, that: “22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 saying, ‘Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!’ 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be quiet, and come out of him!’ 26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.” Again, another fallen angel or demon knew Jesus was the Son of God and was afraid that Jesus had come to destroy him, which will come later at the final judgement. A Jewish exorcists went bad when some Jewish believers were performing an exorcism by attempting to casting out demon(s) in the name of Jesus and Paul. The exorcism failed where the demons said they knew Jesus and Paul but did not know them as stated in Acts 19:13-17, “Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.”
James explains in the scriptures that we who believe that there is one God (is NOT enough) for even the demons believe and tremble – James 2:19.
Do you know where you will spend eternity after you die on earth? Or do you know for sure that you are written in the eternal Lamb’s Book of Life – Revelation 3:5, Revelation 20:15?
