What is the most important decision you will ever make in life? Is it what friends you will hang out with at middle school, high school, or college? Or what extracurricular activities or sports you will be involved in? Is your most important decision on where you will attend college or what your career path will be? Or where you will land your first job? Is it who you will decide to marry and share your life with? Or is it on planning a family and the experience of having your first child? Or is it your decision to save and invest your money at an early age for a plentiful retirement? So, what is most important to you?
These and many other questions are all very important life changing decisions that require lots of thoughts, focus, and planning towards carrying out your life-long goals. However, there is another much more important decision that must be chosen. This is the most important decision you will ever make! In this life, whether we know it or not, we choose where we will end up and spend eternity in the next life. If we do not choose, or simply do nothing, then by default, we are doomed to an eternity of condemnation and torment. We must put our trust in Jesus (the Messiah and only Son of God) as our Lord and Savior.
God gave up His only Son Jesus as payment in full for us and our sinful nature. Approximately 6,000 years ago, the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve sinned against God, which caused the great fall of all mankind. By our own standards (not God’s), this was not a huge sin. They only ate a piece of fruit. Adam and Eve did not commit murder or worship false gods but were in direct disobedience to God’s only commandment. They were deceived and tricked by the serpent (Satan) to go against God’s will where this sinful act and curse by God spread to all future generations.
We were doomed from the beginning since the first sin of one man, Adam. This death spread to all of us until God intervened by sending His Son Jesus as salvation for us. God’s ever-loving grace overcame our sins that would have led to our everlasting death.
Romans 5:12–17:
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to all people [no one being able to stop it or escape its power], because they all sinned. Sin was [committed] in the world before the Law [was given], but sin is not charged [against anyone] when there is no law [against it]. Yet death ruled [over mankind] from Adam to Moses [the Lawgiver], even over those who had not sinned as Adam did. Adam is a type of Him (Christ) who was to come [but in reverse—Adam brought destruction, Christ brought salvation]. But the free gift [of God] is not like the trespass [because the gift of grace overwhelms the fall of man]. For if many died by one man’s trespass [Adam’s sin], much more [abundantly] did God’s grace and the gift [that comes] by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to [benefit] the many. Nor is the gift [of grace] like that which came through the one who sinned. For on the one hand the judgment [following the sin] resulted from one trespass and brought condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift resulted from many trespasses and brought justification [the release from sin’s penalty for those who believe]. For if by the trespass of the one (Adam), death reigned through the one (Adam), much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in [eternal] life through the One, Jesus Christ.
God gave up everything for us so that if we made the right decision to follow Jesus, we would have everlasting life with Him and forevermore fellowship with Him in Christ (Romans 5:6–11). We must decide. Making no decision or ignoring this decision by default rejects God and His Son and makes us enemies of God in Christ. We become friends with the world and will be condemned to suffer the same fate as the world and our enemy, Satan, and his dominions.
John 3:16–21:
“For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge and condemn the world [that is, to initiate the final judgment of the world], but that the world might be saved through Him. Whoever believes and has decided to trust in Him [as personal Savior and Lord] is not judged [for this one, there is no judgment, no rejection, no condemnation]; but the one who does not believe [and has decided to reject Him as personal Savior and Lord] is judged already [that one has been convicted and sentenced], because he has not believed and trusted in the name of the [One and] only begotten Son of God [the One who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, the One who alone can save him]. This is the judgment [that is, the cause for indictment, the test by which people are judged, the basis for the sentence]: the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For every wrongdoer hates the Light, and does not come to the Light [but shrinks from it] for fear that his [sinful, worthless] activities will be exposed and condemned. But whoever practices truth [and does what is right—morally, ethically, spiritually] comes to the Light, so that his works may be plainly shown to be what they are—accomplished in God [divinely prompted, done with God’s help, in dependence on Him].”
So, in this life, if we take the average lifespan for humans as being around seventy-five years of age, this in no way compares to a life of living forever. This life on earth is like a twinkling of an eye blinking compared to eternity in the afterlife.
1 Peter 1:24–25:
For, “ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER.” And this is the word [the good news of salvation] which was preached to you.
This life is temporary and will soon pass away. This life is very short and like a vapor of smoke that will soon evaporate compared to an eternity (Job 7:9–10). The next life will last forever.
James 4:14:
Yet you do not know [the least thing] about what may happen in your life tomorrow. [What is secure in your life?] You are merely a vapor [like a puff of smoke or a wisp of steam from a cooking pot] that is visible for a little while and then vanishes [into thin air].
God’s Word tells us that we have a crucial decision to make, which will determine our eternal fate of where we will end up – heaven or hell? Our eternal Creator of all living things and Creator of the universe, stars, planets, and earth has presented to us His awesome love, mercy, grace, and blessings, if we will be wise enough to trust in Him as our God and trust His Son Jesus as our Savior.
John 10:27–30:
The sheep that are My own hear My voice and listen to Me; I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they will never, ever [by any means] perish; and no one will ever snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater and mightier than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are One [in essence and nature].”
Our eternal Father has given us His most precious gift, His one and only Son, Jesus, as our blessed hope and redeemer of salvation to dwell with Him in heaven in true fellowship with the blessed trinity forever. We were bought at a price, by the precious blood of Jesus, where God has allowed Christ to live in us and through us by His Holy Spirit. We become the sheep of Jesus, our Great Shepherd!
but [you were actually purchased] with precious blood, like that of a [sacrificial] lamb unblemished and spotless, the priceless blood of Christ. For He was foreordained (foreknown) before the foundation of the world, but has appeared [publicly] in these last times for your sake and through Him you believe [confidently] in God [the heavenly Father], who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are [centered and rest] in God.
As this is a free gift from God’s awesome love and grace, we must choose. No one else can make this decision for us. Our parents or family members cannot make this decision for us. Our spouse or our pastor (preacher, evangelist, bishop, or priest) are not able to choose for us. This is between you and God, Jesus His Son, and God’s Spirit (His Holy Spirit). This decision is by our own free will. God, our Creator, does not force us to love Him in return. He does not force us on what choice to make, but He is sovereign according to our decision.
Hebrews 4:14–16:
Inasmuch then as we [believers] have a great High Priest who has [already ascended and] passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith and cling tenaciously to our absolute trust in Him as Savior]. For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize and understand our weaknesses and temptations, but One who has been tempted [knowing exactly how it feels to be human] in every respect as we are, yet without [committing any] sin. Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].
Jesus became the only worthy Servant, Shepherd, High Priest, and Redeemer for carrying out God’s plan and will for us. This was God’s plan of reconciliation and salvation for us to have a relationship with the true living God while fellowshipping with Him through Christ. Because Jesus died for us and shed His blood on the cross at Calvary and was resurrected three days later by God’s Holy Spirit, our debt was paid in full.
Hebrews 5:1–6:
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed [to act] on behalf of men in things relating to God, so that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the spiritually ignorant and misguided, since he is also subject to human weakness; and because of this [human weakness] he is required to offer sacrifices for sins, for himself as well as for the people. And besides, one does not appropriate for himself the honor [of being high priest], but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. So too Christ did not glorify Himself so as to be made a high priest, but He [was exalted and appointed by the One] who said to Him, “YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN (fathered) YOU [declared Your authority and rule over the nations]”; just as He also says in another place, “YOU ARE A PRIEST [appointed] FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”
It is up to us alone to choose whether we will end up in heaven forever with God in Christ or whether we will end up in eternal death, destruction, and condemnation in hell, where the fire is never quenched. Jesus explains how serious sin is and tells us how we must do everything to resist it.
Mark 9:43–44:
If your hand causes you to stumble and sin, cut it off [that is, remove yourself from the source of temptation]! It is better for you to enter life crippled, than to have two hands and go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, [where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT PUT OUT.]
All we have to do is choose this greatest and most vital decision. We must deny ourselves to humbly follow Him. This free gift of salvation is from God and is by His unfailing love, grace, and mercy. No one can boast about being redeemed because of one’s own self-righteousness since salvation alone is through Jesus and only through Him (Ephesians 2:4–10; Romans 3:24–26; Romans 5:8–11).
The spiritual transformation that is experienced when we are redeemed can be viewed like the metamorphosis transformation of a caterpillar that changes into a beautiful and glorious butterfly. As a wicked sinner, we must (A) Accept Him and acknowledge that we are sinners and are drowning in our own sin, where we desperately are in need of a Savior (Romans 3:23). Our wicked soul and spirit before being redeemed was on its way to death, hell, and destruction (Romans 6:23; Romans 8:13–17). We must wholeheartedly (B) believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for us and was resurrected in the Spirit by overcoming death. We are saved by the shedding of His blood and must (C) Confess Him and His gospel to others with our own lips by faith granted to us from God (John 3:16–21; Romans 10:9–10). (D) We live for Him and continue to be transformed in the likeliness of Christ by one degree of glory to another (2 Corinthians 3:18; Romans 6:1–14).
After making your wisest decision to follow Christ as your Lord and Savior, you now are granted access to have fellowship with the most powerful, most important, Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnibenevolent spiritual being in all the universe. You are a child of the Most-High God and are grafted into His family!
Romans 11:17-27:
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you [Gentiles], being like a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them to share with them the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast over the [broken] branches and exalt yourself at their expense. If you do boast and feel superior, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root that supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand by your faith [as believers understanding the truth of Christ’s deity]. Do not be conceited, but [rather stand in great awe of God and] fear [Him]; for if God did not spare the natural branches [because of unbelief], He will not spare you either. Then appreciate the gracious kindness and the severity of God: to those who fell [into spiritual ruin], severity, but to you, God’s gracious kindness—if you continue in His kindness [by faith and obedience to Him]; otherwise you too will be cut off. And even they [the unbelieving Jews], if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God has the power to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much easier will it be to graft these who are the natural branches back into [the original parent stock of] their own olive tree? I do not want you, believers, to be unaware of this mystery [God’s previously hidden plan]—so that you will not be wise in your own opinion—that a partial hardening has [temporarily] happened to Israel [to last] until the full number of the Gentiles has come in; and so [at that time] all Israel [that is, all Jews who have a personal faith in Jesus as Messiah] will be saved; just as it is written [in Scripture], “THE DELIVERER (Messiah) WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB. THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.”
This is the most essential decision you will ever make in this life. Continue to focus on and cherish your greatest decision by never giving up your Christian walk and devotion through and for God in Christ!
