The Power and Influence of Music

Music is an immensely powerful influence in our daily lives by its neurological effects on our mind and wellbeing. It influences and drives us in many different directions. Music has been proven to provide many benefits, such as, soothing, relaxing, inspirational, moving, stimulating, motivational, stress reducer, mood altering, spiritual, self-esteem booster, and many more. Most of us spend an average of 20% or more each day listening to our favorite inspiring music tunes with some listening as much as 40% on average. Therefore, the influence of music and its impact on our daily lives is of great concern. Surely you have heard the saying, “you are what you listen to.” There is truth in this statement since music has neurological and psychological control over our mindset and wellbeing.

This is the reason that we must carefully choose the music that we listen to, in order, to influence us daily into a positive, kind, loving, relaxing, and spiritual person. Just as some music can present a positive effect, there is other music that can have a negative effect through its lyrics and musical tones. Often, we hear music played on the radio or via online streaming and do not realize how it influences us until we stop the music and replay its awful lyrics. These negative and dark words present us with the wrong message and inspire us to conform to the world, apart from God. This is why we recommend to resist listening to secular music since it could be from the evil one, Satan. The bible tells us that before Lucifer had fallen, God created Lucifer as a perfect beauty, mighty angel full of wisdom and as a musical being as we read in Ezekiel 28:12-15, “ ‘ 12…Thus says the Lord GOD: You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created. 14You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. 15You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.’ ”  The bible also tells us that the evil one is very crafty in his deception as we read in 2 Corinthians 11:14, “ 14…For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” The bible warns us in Ephesians 4:27, “ 27…give no opportunity to the devil.” The devil seeks to steal, kill, and destroy us from our faithful walk with God. The bible commands us in 1 Peter 5:8, “ 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”  We must continue in our faithful walk with God through Jesus and remember who our true enemy is as we read in Ephesians 6:12, “ 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

This is why as Christians or Servants for Jesus, we must always listen to God inspired gospel hymns or contemporary Christian music due to it speaking to us daily through God’s word to enhance our daily walk with God through Christ Jesus. Listening to God inspired music daily provides many benefits during our daily walk, like putting us into a praise & worship setting, promoting prayer time, strengthening our faith, brings us back to God, helps us resist evil thoughts, opposing foolish ways, inspires our soul, improves our spiritual and mental health, and many others. The bible tells us that we are to worship God and sing to him a new song as we read in Psalms 33:2-3, “ 2Praise the LORD with the harp; make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings. 3Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy.” We also read a similar passage in Psalms 96:1-2, “ 1Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2Sing to the LORD, bless His name; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.” In Psalms 150:3-6, it states, 3Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; praise Him with the lute and harp! 4Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes! 5Praise Him with loud cymbals; praise Him with clashing cymbals! 6Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.” Jesus also tells the evil one (Satan) as He was being tempted in the wilderness to ONLY worship God as we read in Matthew 4:10, “ 10Then Jesus said to him, ‘ “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

The Christian and gospel music industry has greatly improved over the last few decades to having an abundance of music categories and genres in basically all matters of taste, ultimately allowing believers in Jesus to be able listen to Christian music all day and every day. Today’s Christian genres may include the following but are not limited to these: gospel hymns, classical instrumental, worship, easy-listening, contemporary, alternative, country, soft-rock, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and more.
