Jesus tells us that in the last days, it will be like the days of Noah and the days of Sodom & Gomorrah – Matthew 24:37-39, Luke 17:26-30. The bible also repeats these statements describing the last days as being extremely evil while snubbing God and rejecting the gospel – 2 Timothy 3:1-9, 1 Peter 3:20, 2 Peter 2:4-11, 2 Peter 3:3-7, 1 John 2:18-23, Jude 1:6-8. Jesus tells us that no one knows the day or hour of His return, but it will be in the last days comparable to the days of Noah where the people rejected God and only cared about themselves and their lustful desires as we read in Matthew 24:36-39, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” Although the bible does not tell us exactly what happened during Noah’s time of faithfully constructing the ark that God had commanded him, but he was probably mocked and teased by all that saw him building a large boat during a somewhat drought. It is estimated that Noah spent approximately 100 years constructing the ark where he tried to warn all the people that asked him what he was doing – 2 Peter 2:5. Prior to the flood, the estimated population on the earth was around 750 million people. At that time, God saw where man was continuously evil in his heart and was sad that He ever made man. God also saw that the watcher angels had left their angelic domain and created giant offspring (Nephilim) that were very wicked on the earth. During this time, God only found favor in one man, Noah, and ended up sparing only 8 souls (Noah and his family) out of millions during His great wrath as we read in Genesis 6:1-8, “When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the LORD said, ‘My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.’ The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came into the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him to His heart. So the LORD said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.” The bible tells us that by faith and by the fear of God, Noah believed in the future destruction that would take place on the earth as God had commanded him and began constructing the ark as stated in Hebrews 11:7, “By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”
Just before God destroyed Sodom & Gomorrah, He sent two angels to rescue Lot and his family by forcing them out before raining down fire on the two cities. Sodom & Gomorrah had become very wicked in the eyes of the Lord by performing same-sex acts and many other sins that were an abomination to Him – Genesis 19:1-11, Jude 1:6-8. After the two angels blinded the wicked men of Sodom & Gomorrah, Lot and his family were instructed to run for their lives without turning back as stated in Genesis 19:12-29, “Then the men said to Lot, ‘Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place. For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it.’ So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, ‘Up! Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city.’ But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting. As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, ‘Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.’ But he lingered. So, the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. And as they brought them out, one said, ‘Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.’ And Lot said to them, ‘Oh, no, my lords. Behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life. But I cannot escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I die. Behold, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!’ He said to him, ‘Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. Escape there quickly, for I can do nothing till you arrive there.’ Therefore, the name of the city was called Zoar. The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven. And He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD. And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace. So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.” Jesus explains that as the sudden destruction came upon on Sodom & Gomorrah, it will also be like that in the last days and during His 2nd Coming as He explained in Luke 17:28-30, “Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.”
The apostle Peter tells us how the Lord can deliver the righteous out of the world away from His wrath where destruction will fall on the wicked and unrighteous. These wicked people are ones that fall into temptations from the desires of the flesh, putting the love of themselves and idols above God as we read in 2 Peter 2:4-11, “For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)— then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord.” The prophet, Ezekiel, tells us that the righteous will be delivered from God’s wrath – Ezekiel 14:12-20. Jesus tells us that we will know the season of His coming by the parable of the fig tree. He also tells us that the generation that sees these last days will not pass away until everything takes place as stated Matthew 24:32-34, “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that He is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.” The apostle Paul gives us a glimpse of what it will look like during the last days. He describes these as difficult times where wickedness will greatly increase as explained in 2 Timothy 3:1-9, “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.”
Jesus described how many would follow the world and enter the easy and wide gate that leads to hell and destruction, where only a few would enter into the difficult and narrow gate that leads to life in heaven – Matthew 7:13-14. Jesus explained this sinful world as those that reject God and the gospel of Christ of being like the parable of the sower where only a few would accept the good news and carry out the will of the Father as we read in Mark 4:14-20, “The sower sows the word. And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” Scoffers will appear in the last days rejecting the truth, denying God’s word, and perverting the gospel. The heavens and earth along with the wicked will be condemned by fire at the judgement day as stated in 2 Peter 3:3-7, “…scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.’ For this they willfully forget that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”
Paul tells us that we must repent since we will be judged by God through His Son Jesus as we read in Acts 17:29-31, “Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent, because He has fixed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom He has appointed; and of this He has given assurance to all by raising Him from the dead.” Therefore, we must continue seeking Jesus and watching out for His soon return for us as stated in Titus 2:11-15, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works. Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.” For our citizenship is not on this earth but is in heaven with our Lord and Savior. On that blessed day, our deteriorating bodies are to be converted into glorified bodies for spending eternity with our Lord Jesus as we read in Philippians 3:20-21, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body, by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to Himself.”
Peter recalls what was spoken of by the prophet, Joel, about God pouring out His Spirit on many during the last days. The Holy Spirit would spark a fire in the hearts of believers to prophesy, see visions, and dream dreams. There will also be signs and wonders in heaven (Solar Storms and Blood Moon) and beneath the earth (Earthquakes and Volcano Eruptions). Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved as stated in Acts 2:16-21, “But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ” All believers in Christ that will see the rapture take place will be taken up in the clouds like Enoch and Elijah who never experienced death for God took them. They walked so close to God that they were counted worthy to be taken without experiencing death – Genesis 5:24, 2 Kings 2:11. Enoch walked so close to God for 300 years and was so separated from this sinful world that God brought him home early or at a young age of 365 years compared to others that lived almost a millennial. Like Enoch, Jesus tells all believers to remain holy, faithful, and watchful so that they will be counted worthy to escape the coming tribulation period by being taken up by Him during His return – Matthew 24:42-44, Mark 13:32-33, 1 Corinthians 1:6-9, Philippians 3:20-21, 2 Thessalonians 1:10-12, Titus 2:11-15. Jesus explains this in Luke 21:34-36, “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” The parallel description of staying awake and being watchful is explained in the gospel of Mark where we do not know the hour of when the master will return to his home to be with his servants as stated in Mark 13:33-37, “Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore, stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.” So, look up while pondering on these words in Titus 2:11-13, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
