Some church denominations have taught and continue to teach the message that “once you are saved you are always saved.” Whether this is true or not, the bible does not state these exact words of “once saved always saved.” This message is absolutely true from God’s perspective and His glory! He is always loving, faithful, true, righteous, and sovereign towards us where Jesus already paid the price for our sins as the new covenant which God will never forfeit – Deuteronomy 7:9, Jeremiah 31:31-33, Ezekiel 18:24-28, Psalms 33:4-5, Psalms 86:15, Romans 11:27, 1 Corinthians 1:9, 2 Thessalonians 3:3, Hebrews 8:10, Hebrews 10:16, 2 Timothy 2:13. God gives us free will to choose to accept Jesus or to reject Him. It’s our choice. He does not force us to love Him. If we repent of our sins, accept Him, and love Him, we become His sheep where no one else can snatch us out of His hand – John 10:25-30. Because we have free will and are always tempted by the enemy and accuser (Job 1:6-12, Job 2:1-6, Zechariah 3:1-5, Revelation 12:10), we can backslide, stumble, or even fall away – Jeremiah 8:4-13. Because of free will, we can walk away from God in Christ as some have done. In God’s new covenant, we are the ones who are unfaithful and forego His covenant by stumbling or falling away from being enslaved to sin. God’s word provides several scriptures about the possibility of falling away from the faith and from the gospel truth by being corrupted and confined to sin in the world. Paul tells us that in the last days some will depart from the faith and from the gospel truth as we read in 1 Timothy 4:1-2, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.” These will desire the worldly lusts and riches which lead to destruction as revealed in 1 Timothy 6:9, “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.”
Whether we have salvation in Christ or not, sin is sin, and sin is still an enemy of God. God hates sin! – Proverbs 6:16-19, Proverbs 8:13. Jesus tells us how serious sin is by His harsh statement of cutting off a member of your body that causes you to sin in order to prevent you from being cast into hell as stated in Mark 9:43-44, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.” If we have fellowship with the world, this corrupts us into picking up the wicked unbeliever’s bad sinful habits as explained in 1 Corinthians 15:33-34, “Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God…” Paul tells us in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death…” James reveals that if we are friends with and value the sinful nature of the world then we are enemies of God as we read in James 4:4, “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” Do NOT get caught up in the world’s sins since continuing a life in sinful nature will NOT inherit the kingdom of heaven as revealed in Ephesians 5:5-7, “For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore, do not be partakers with them.” Paul continues this same message in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11,“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” As Christians, we are the temple of the one true living God. We are the light as Christ dwells in us and we cannot fellowship with darkness as expressed in 2 Corinthians 6:14-16, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.’ ” We are to remain holy and sinless by presenting ourselves to the world as an example of Christ who lives in us. We are to be kind, loving, tenderhearted, while forgiving others as God forgave us through Christ – Matthew 6:15, Matthew 18:32-35, Mark 11:25-26, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15, Ephesians 1:3-14, Ephesians 2:1-5, Ephesians 4:29-32. As we are redeemed in Christ, we are filled with the fruits of the Spirit as detailed in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
If we teach the “once saved always saved” message to new believers in Christ, it gives them a false sense of hope into thinking they have a license to sin. This thinking allows them to believe they can keep on living their sinful lives in the world without any consequences due to trusting they are always saved no matter what. The problem with this belief is that grace does not thrive for continued sin and wickedness after we have been enlightened to the gospel. This teaching also does not exactly line up with the commandment of creating true disciples for Christ as stated in Matthew 28:19, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Jesus said that we must be born of the water and Spirit as expressed in John 3:5, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” Most mega churches are more concerned about receiving more tithing members as a religious ritual rather than creating disciples by baptizing them in the Spirit. If we are still living in sin and NOT following God’s commandments, then Christ does NOT live in us and we did NOT truly repent of our sins as revealed in Romans 6:1-13, “Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise, you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” If we do NOT repent and become a true follower of Christ, then we are in jeopardy of being blotted out the Book of Life as revealed in Revelation 3:2-5, “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore, if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.”
Jesus tells us that we are hypocrites if we honor Him with our lips where our hearts and actions are far from Him as expressed in Matthew 15:8-9, “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” Being a hypocrite is being lukewarm where Jesus says you are neither cold nor hot and I will spew you out of Me as detailed in Revelation 3:15-16, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” If there is NO repentance to sins, then we will perish – Luke 13:3. Living in sin allows Satan, not God (Proverbs 5:22, 1 John 3:8), to take hold of your life as explained in Ephesians 4:27, “give no opportunity to the devil.” Paul continues this same message in Romans 6:20-22, “For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” Jesus stated that when we commit sins, we are slave to sin as revealed in John 8:34, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” As true born-again believers by walking in the Spirit, we do NOT practice sinning and refrain from sin as stated in 1 John 3:9, “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.” God’s grace does NOT cover acts of continued sin after we have come to know the gospel truth as we read in Hebrews 10:26-27, “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.” If we are living in sin, then we do NOT have the full armor of God and therefore cannot stand against the wicked schemes of the devil as detailed in Ephesians 6:11-18, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which, you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
If we love the world and lust for the flesh, then the love of God is NOT in us. Only those who do the will of God will live forever as stated in 1 John 2:15-17, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” If we love the world then we are under the enemy’s trance (Ephesians 2:2) as we read in 1 John 5:19, “We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.” We cannot serve two masters, God and the world – Matthew 6:24, 1 Corinthians 10:21. We must choose daily of whom we will serve – Joshua 24:14-15. Jesus said we love Him if we follow His commandments. When we keep His commandments and do His will, we have the love of God and Jesus as revealed in John 14:21, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” We do NOT fellowship with God in Christ unless we keep His commandments as explained in 1 John 2:3-6, “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” Jesus said if we do His will, He will know us and we will enter heaven as detailed in Matthew 7:21-23, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ ” The bible tells us that we should partake of the Lord’s supper in remembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus until He returns for His sheep. However, we are told to examine ourselves before partaking of it since we may be living in sin or may have unconfessed sins. If we do not examine or judge ourselves before participating while having unconfessed sins, then we could be bringing judgement of weakness and sickness to ourselves as explained in 1 Corinthians 11:27-32, “Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason, many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.”
You may say, but I am a “believer of Christ.” That is great but simply being a believer of Christ does not make your salvation secure in Jesus since even the demons believe and tremble but will be condemned into the lake of fire as we read in James 2:19, “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!” For the demons believe and tremble which is more than merely believing because you may have NO fear and NO trembling. If you did fear the Lord by trembling, you would obey His commandments by choosing NOT to live in sin as revealed in Philippians 2:12-13, “…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” The real question is do you have a personal relationship with Jesus? Many people misinterpret the true meaning of “believe” that is in the bible, which comes from the Greek word “pisteuo”. This Greek word “pisteuo” means to “commit unto, be committed unto, commit to one’s trust, be put in trust with,” etc. Now, the English definition of “believe” means something entirely different to where many of us bank our entire salvation in Christ according to the English definition of “believe” instead of the true biblical meaning. The English definition of “believe” is “to accept something as true, feel sure of the truth, hold something as an opinion, think or suppose,” etc. Faith or belief by itself and without fruitful works is dead as stated in James 2:14-26, “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus, also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.’ And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
Jesus tells us that we must deny ourselves daily to follow Him as explained in Luke 9:23-26, “…If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.” We cannot love anyone more than Jesus, and if so, we are NOT worthy of Him and cannot be His disciple as stated in Matthew 10:37, “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” Every branch that appears to abide in the true vine of Jesus and does NOT bear fruit will be cut off by the vinedresser, God the Father, and burned in the fire. If we do God’s will and bear fruit for expanding His kingdom, we are His disciples as Jesus explains in the True Vine parable, John 15:1-8, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. ‘I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.’ ” Jesus explains the parable of the Seed Sower and how those that hear His word, keep it, and bear fruit for His kingdom will NOT perish as we read in Luke 8:11-15, “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.” Jesus said His family of disciples are those that hear His words and do them – Matthew 12:49-50, Luke 8:21. Suppose you lived in medieval times and the king of the land gave you a command, but you did NOT do it. What would happen? Death by execution? Torture by punishment? Imprisonment? Is the Son of the living God, Jesus our Lord & Savior and His authority NOT of much more value than a king of the land?
When we become a born-again Christian, we make Jesus our Lord and Savior, and we become a new creation in Him by resisting all sin. Just as Christ was crucified for our sins and was resurrected in the Spirit to be at the heavenly throne with God the Father, we too must crucify our old sinful self and flesh to walk in the Spirit with Him. If we walk in the Spirit, we will live everlasting by putting to death the sinful acts of the flesh (Romans 8:1-11) as we read in Romans 8:13-17, “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” As we continue to walk in His Holy Spirit, we become transformed through Him each day to His same image from one degree of glory to another as detailed in 2 Corinthians 3:12-18, “Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech— unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless, when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” As we crown Jesus as our true King of kings, we obey His words where Jesus abides in us as we read in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Your old sinful life has passed away and all things have become new in Christ as stated in 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Salvation in Christ is for those who obey His words as explained in Hebrews 5:9-10, “And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest ‘according to the order of Melchizedek.’ ”
When Paul knew of his upcoming death and soon departure from this life, he admitted that he had fought the good fight by finishing his race for Christ, his Christian walk for the Lord, where he never left the faith as stated in 2 Timothy 4:6-7, “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” So, what would have happened to him if he would have left the faith and never returned as some do? What would have happened if Paul had decided to give up his race for Christ? The bible tells of some that will leave the faith and never return to where it would have been better for them to have never known the truth as revealed in 2 Peter 2:20-21, “For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.” Although some that were fruitful while in the faith, left their first love and never returned where their end was destruction as explained in Hebrews 6:4-8, “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.” As a member of the body of Christ, it’s important that we continue to build up and encourage other members in Christ to prevent any from stumbling or falling away. If one member suffers, we all suffer – 1 Corinthians 12:26. Therefore, we must make every effort to edify one another in Christ daily with prayer and supplication as stated in Hebrews 3:12-15, “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called ‘Today,’ lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, while it is said: ‘Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.’ ” As saints for Christ, we must do our part in helping bring back any sheep that have wandered from the truth as explained in James 5:19-20, “Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”
The enemy is very crafty in his deception and was able to deceive Eve in the Garden of Eden, and was able to mislead a third of heaven – Genesis 3:1-6, Revelation 12:4, Revelation 12:9. He appears as an angel of light – 2 Corinthians 11:14. We must test every spirit according to the scriptures (1 John 4:1) since we could possibly become deceived by false teachings as we read in 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.” We must maintain the race for Christ as Paul did by doing God’s will and obeying His word. We must be watchful and ready for Christ’s soon return. For Christ will appear to those a second time who eagerly wait for Him as revealed in Hebrews 9:24-28, “For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.”
If it were easy to follow and serve God in Christ, everyone would do it. This is why Jesus said many would follow the easy and wide path of the world into destruction where only a few would take the difficult and narrow path to heaven as stated in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
