In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth – Genesis 1:1. He created them to be perfect. God also created a perfect garden of Eden on earth for mankind to populate. Because Adam and Eve sinned against God, the earth and the garden became cursed from the first deceptive sin by Satan, the serpent – Genesis 3:1-6. Before Satan deceived Eve, the garden of Eden was a perfect creation by God and was without sin and free from evil. God cursed mankind and the earth because of this first sin committed as stated in Genesis 3:17, “And to Adam he said, ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.’ ” Since the beginning of creation, God’s word has promised in various locations of the scriptures that there would eventually be new heavens and a new earth where all the wicked would experience eternal death and punishment with fire – Isaiah 51:6, Isaiah 65:17-25, Isaiah 66:22-24, 1 Corinthians 7:31, 2 Peter 3:7, 1 John 2:17. This eternal punishment includes Satan and his fallen angels, since Satan (Lucifer) committed the first sin of pride in heaven and deceived a third of the angels – Isaiah 14:12-16, Ezekiel 28:12-19, Revelation 12:3-4, Revelation 12:9, Revelation 20:10. The righteous shall dwell forever with the Lord and worship Him in the new heavens and new earth as we read in Psalms 102:25-28, “Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end. The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you.”
There will be no more crying or distress in the new heavens and new earth. The former things will not be remembered. The wolf and the lamb shall dwell together, the lion will be calm, tame, and will eat straw like an ox, and the serpent will eat dust. No animal will hurt or destroy anyone in God’s new holy mountain as the prophet Isaiah explained in Isaiah 65:17-25, “ ‘For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity, for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the LORD, and their descendants with them. Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain,’ says the LORD.”
The disciple Luke wrote about Jesus who died for all mankind and must remain in heaven until all things are made new for the creation of the new heavens and earth spoken of by the prophets as stated in Acts 3:20-21, “that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.” Jesus told His disciples 2,000 years ago before He ascended into heaven that He would go and prepare a place for us, all believers, in the new heavens and new earth where He will be coming back for us as we read in John 14:2-3, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” This will be a glorious day for those that have a relationship with Jesus and love God by performing His will. His word tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “…What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.” The bible speaks of a new city, Jerusalem, that is to come on the new earth – Hebrews 11:16, Hebrews 13:14. Jesus also tells of His new and glorious throne in the new world and new city where the twelve disciples will sit on twelve thrones as we read in Matthew 19:28-29, “…Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for My name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.”
Before the new heavens and new earth will take place, Jesus will come back for His second coming in power and glory at the end of the great tribulation to establish His millennial reign on earth for 1,000 years. The Christians (both awake and asleep) that will be raptured before the great tribulation will reign with Christ during His millennial reign. After the millennial reign, the great white throne judgement will take place where all the fallen angels, Satan, and the wicked and unrighteous mankind will be judged and cast into the lake of fire where they will burn for eternity along with the old heavens and earth. The disciple Peter tells us that the existing heavens and earth are being kept until the great day of judgement as we read in 2 Peter 3:7, “But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.” The second coming of Jesus will come like a thief in the night, where all the wicked unbelievers will be both startled and surprised. The bible tells us that the righteous will be eagerly awaiting His soon return as stated in 2 Peter 3:10-13, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to His promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”
Jesus comes to make all things new with the new heavens and new earth, and new city, Jerusalem, where there will be no more death, mourning, or pain. This will be like the perfect garden of Eden, for the former things will have passed away as the disciple John states in his vision as we read in Revelation 21:1-5, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’ And He who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ ” The new city will not have a temple since God and Jesus will be the holy temple. There will be no sun or moon and no need for light since the glory of God and Jesus will shine and give everything its light. There will be no more night. The gates to the new city will always remain open to worship God and Jesus for those that are found written in the Lamb’s book of life – Revelation 21:22-27, Revelation 22:1-5.
John speaks of the new city having high walls with twelve foundations and twelve gates with angels at each gate. The city is described as a perfect cube that is equal in length on all sides (approximately 1,380 miles long or more), where the streets are made of pure gold, like clear glass, and the city comprised with every kind of precious jewel. John explains his vision of the new city construction in Revelation 21:12-21, “It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed—on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal. He also measured its wall, 144 cubits by human measurement, which is also an angel’s measurement. The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”
Do you know where you will spend eternity after you die on earth? Will Jesus be your Lord and Savior or your eternal judge – John 3:15-21, Romans 2:16, 2 Timothy 4:1? Jesus says He is the narrow gate to heaven where it is difficult to find and only a few will enter by it where many will enter the easy, wide and broad gate that leads to Hell and destruction – Matthew 7:13-14. Will you experience the second eternal death (spiritual death) – Revelation 2:11, Revelation 20:6, Revelation 21:8? Do you know for sure that you are written in the eternal Lamb’s Book of Life – Revelation 3:5, Revelation 20:12-15?
