As you begin your bible study and devotion in God’s word, first, always pray before and after reading scriptures that God will reveal His word to you for better understanding and for carrying out His will. All of God’s word has been written by God-inspired authors and prophets through His Holy Spirit revealed to His authors and NOT by man’s own interpretation – 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21. The bible is a powerful God-inspired book of scriptures that consist of 39 books in the Old Testament (OT) and 27 books in the New Testament (OT) for a total of 66 books comprised of 31,102 verses. There is awesome power in this book because these are words from the all-powerful, all-knowing, and almighty Creator of all creation, including the heavens and earth. This holy book gives us God’s instructions, teachings, and commandments for repentance, forgiveness, salvation, and many more – Hebrews 4:12. The bible a is lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path – Psalms 119:105. God’s word (Sword of the Spirit), a major component of the full armor of God, helps us stand against evil forces of darkness – Ephesians 6:11-18. Jesus, God’s only Son, tells us the major importance of His word in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” This tells us that God’s word will remain forever, in this life and the next life to come. Therefore, the holy bible is the all-time greatest book on the planet. We believe the bible’s true meaning for us today is the “Best Instructions Before Leaving Earth.”
This is the reason we must get the most comprehension and understanding from God’s word as we can, and why we offer some tools here to enhance your scripture learning, comprehension, understanding, and to bring us closer to God through His Son Jesus. There are some bible study tools that can help better understand God’s word, that include a good study bible, a concordance, a bible dictionary, and historical maps with timelines. A good study bible is one that has a good track record of translations and referencing other similar bible passages, in both the OT and NT, and having good commentary notes for helping with difficult scripture interpretations. The concordance is like an index in other books where the word found in the bible will list each bible verse and reference(s) associated with the word. The concordance allows one to read multiple bible verses in order to get a better understanding of the word in question. A bible dictionary will list many different words and subjects found throughout the bible in alphabetical order like an encyclopedia and will provide a definition for each. Historical maps and timelines will help enhance understanding by knowing specific cities, countries or kingdoms and their locations listed in the bible with corresponding and colorful map(s) of that particular timeframe.
With the enhanced technology and applications of today, you can now achieve all of the tools mentioned above and more in one software application. One can also choose the desired bible translation (ESV, KJV, NKJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, etc.), and compare with multiple other translations in parallel for better understanding of the scriptures. These software tools and applications also include a concordance and bible dictionary including giving you the exact Hebrew and Greek words used along with their meanings. Many of these applications would include colorful maps and timelines for enhanced understanding that provide a history, introduction, setting, and information about the author for each book of the bible. These study bible apps offer an overall search feature for better research tools. One can also highlight passages, tag particular scriptures with subject categories, add individual notes, track reading history, and bookmark passages for later reading. Users can also receive at one’s choosing recommended daily bible verses or passages for the day or week. One can also select from different daily devotional and daily reading plans that allow reading the entire bible within a year, 6 months, or less, etc. Many of these tools offer scripture memorization resources as well where one may see the same bible verse appear of their choosing every time the app is opened. Some may also come with audio listening features for listening as you read or listening while driving in the car. Some apps may come with daily reminders multiple times per day to get in God’s word which is much needed during our busy schedules and many distractions. These tools will help enhance your bible literacy and comprehension of God’s word. Some of these tools allow usage across multiple devices and platforms, such as, PCs, laptops, tablets, mobile devices, iOS, android, Windows 10, etc.
The recommendations here are NOT to get you away from using your traditional hard or softbound printed bibles but are only recommended as additional tools for enhancing your bible study and comprehension in order to become better witnesses for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! There are many software applications on the market today with many of them being offered for free or at very inexpensive prices. No one software application may fit your needs exactly, but we have listed a few below as a good starting point:
